Mar 1001:

Local Trade - Sell 400 Wood
Local Trade - Buy 500 Food
(TAKE 1 TURN)

With ALL Incoming Forest Land, build Woodcutters (You can always local trade excess wood if you need gold. With ALL Incoming Mountains build as Gold Mines. With Plains, try and build some town centers every turn now.
Keep an eye on status page so you are always +food even in winter months.

Always remember when you send out explorers to check you have enough food to feed your pop.

Otherwise, you will starve them and then you will have a bad start as you will not have enough population to work your gold mines and other buildings.

Also send out 75% of your explorers for ALL Land, the remaining 25% for Mountain Only initially and change to 75% Mountains Only 25% ALL Land when you find it hard to send out max explorers for Town Centers.

You will need to increase your toolmakers now, I would advise increasing them by at least another 150 over the next 15-20 turns (so you can keep up with your buildings and increase the pace of building.

NOTE: Byzantines should never make tools .. this is ideal for helping the mongol in your alliance at the start, buying his tools for 185 or a more competitive price.

Key with Byzantines in the exploring start strategy is to go extremely high mountains to plains ratio and exploring a lot of plains out of protection after 200 turns or so. If done right, you should be on 500 or so research at the end of your out of protection exploring phase.

The start is off, by AUG 1000 you will be out of food and losing pop.. I tried this a few times to see if it was truely wrong, and unfortunately it is, but the hints and tips are definitely a great help to newer players.

I no longer play 1000ad, although at the time I had used this start very successfully on numerous occasions. Perhaps the rate of food consumption has changed or some other factors have changed that has now made the start more outdated. If that is the case, changing food production to a lower rate earlier (or buying enough food to cover consumption), should overcome the problem.
